A DOLLY BIRD AND DUBLIN BOY

image

This is a photo of my mother and father from February 1969. It was taken on one of their first dates. My mother is 18 years old and my father is 23. I love this photo as my father looks pleased as punch to have such a glamorous dolly bird on his arm and my mother is looking at my father with an amused smile.

Both my parents were from working class catholic backgrounds and I am always impressed by the fact they are so well turned out in these early pictures. My mother often made her own clothes and cut her own hair. My father, originally a Dublin boy, had spent some time working in an East End pub and this had opened his eyes to the music and fashions of London in the 1960’s. He still eulogises about his first taste of tomato ketchup in a Wimpy bar.
